Luis Oliviera Goncalves Names Angola Palancas Negras Squad For International Friendly Against Korea Republic

Angola coach Luis Olivieira Goncalves has dropped Benfica striker Pedro Mantorras for Angola’s friendly match away to fellow World Cup finalists South Korea in Seoul on March 1.

The Portuguese-based player has been critical of Angola coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves after failing to get a match start for the World Cup qualifiers during the recent African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt, in which Angola did not make it past the first round.

The Benfica striker was only used as a second-half substitute in two of the three matches that Angola played, and had a dispute with Goncalves over his lack of play.

The injury-plagued Benfica striker was out of the Angola the squad for more than three years, and was only brought back for Angola’s World Cup qualifier against Algeria last year.

The Palancas Negras coach has brought into the 20-man squad for the trip to Korea the uncapped Rui Marques, who plays at Leeds United in England, as well as Academica Coimbra’s Zuela and defender Marco Airosa.

Six players from the squad at the Nations Cup finals in Egypt have been dropped, including Mantorras.

This will be Angola's first match since the African Cup of Nations, and will be their second trip to Asia in the last four months.

In November they lost 1-0 to a last-minute goal in a friendly against Japan in Tokyo.

Angola have been drawn against Iran, Mexico and Portugal at the World Cup finals in Germany in June.
