Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher is due to start against Hungary as a holding midfielder for England in their World Cup warm-up friendly at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Carragher usually plays as a centre-half for Liverpool, but is likely to start for The Three Lions in the space ahead of the defence, in a role that Spurs’ Ledley King and Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand have both been asked to cover in the past for England.

It is thought that Carragher’s team-mate, Liverpool’s captain Steven Gerrard is expected to play in more of a free-roaming attacking midfielder role.

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is expected to be rested for tonight’s friendly after picking up a thigh strain, but otherwise Eriksson is aiming to play his strongest possible team.

“We take this game as a good opportunity to see the players for the full 90 minutes,” said England boss Eriksson prior to the match.
