Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard Hoping To Become England Captain After Beckham Retirement - Chelsea Skipper John Terry In Frame

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is hoping that new England head coach Steve McClaren will appoint him as the next England captain after David Beckham retired as the England skipper after the World Cup Finals, with Chelsea's John Terry also a major contender.

Midfielder Gerrard is just one of the possible candidates to captain The Three Lions since former Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren took over from Sven Goran-Eriksson as England head coach, with Gerrard admitting that it would be a dream come true to skipper his country.

“It is flattering to be involved with people talking about that, but I let other people talk about that and I’m sure Steve McClaren will make a decision on that when he is ready,” said Gerrard.

“It is every player’s dream to captain their country and I would love the opportunity, but there are other candidates out there who I am sure would do a really good job as well.”

Another massive contender for the captain’s armband would surely have to be fellow England star and Chelsea captain, defender John Terry, who has been Chelsea captain since Marcel Desailly's retirement in 2004.

Terry has already had the honour of captaining his country, with Terry briefly wearing the captains armband in EURO 2004 when he replaced Michael Owen in a match against Poland but, whatever McClaren's choice, many England fans would be happy to see either Terry or Gerrard become the new Three Lions skipper.
