Aragonés Names 27-Man Squad - Guti & Vicente Excluded - Liverpool's Alonso, Garcia, Morientes & Reina Called For Spain MeetSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 05/05/2006 - 22:17.
Spain coach Luis Aragonés has named a 27-man squad for La Furia Roja’s World Cup get-together on May 8th, surprisingly leaving out Real Madrid midfielder Guti, Valencia winger Vicente and Espanyol’s midfielder Ivan de la Pena. Argentine-born left-back Mauricio Pernia from the up-and-coming Primera Liga side Getafé has also been excluded. Aragonés has recalled the Spain captain Raul and Barca’s Xavi, who are both returning from injury. Raul, who plays for Real Madrid, has not been in top form since returning from a knee injury in February, while Xavi made his first appearance for Barcelona - after spending five months on the sidelines with a knee injury - last week, to a standing ovation from the crowd at the Bernabeu. The experienced Valencia star Vicente has been struggling to recover from a long-term ankle injury and has not returned to action with his club yet, meaning his exclusion. Guti and De la Pena have paid for inconsistent form with their clubs and appear to be out of the running for a place in the final 23-man squad to be named on May 15. Getafe's Argentine fullback Mariano Pernia, who obtained dual nationality last month, was also not included. Of the outsiders called up to the last get-together in April only Villarreal defender Javi Venta and Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta have made the cut. Real Betis's Melli, Celta Vigo's Borja Oubina, Getafe's Jaime Gavilan and Real Zaragoza's Cani look to have dropped out of the running for a Furia Roja place, excepting an injury to another player. All four Spanish Liverpool players; goalkeeper Pepe Reina, hat-trick hero from the play-off’s and midfield playmaker Luis Garcia, free-kick specialist Xabi Alonso and former Real striker Fernando Morientes have all been called, but are not expected to make an appearance in Madrid as they prepare for next weekend's FA Cup final against West Ham United on May 13. Spain have arranged three World Cup warm-up friendlies against Russia in Albacete on May 27, Egypt in Elche on June 3 and against fellow finalist’s Croatia in Geneva two days before the Finals kick-off on June 7. Spain have been drawn alongside Ukraine, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia in Group H at the World Cup which begins on June 9. Spain squad for team get-together: Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Santiago Canizares (Valencia) Defenders: Antonio Lopez (Atlético Madrid), Pablo Ibanez (Atlético Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Real Betis), Asier del Horno (Chelsea), Joan Capdevila (Deportivo Coruna), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Javi Venta (Villarreal) Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquin (Real Betis), Luis Garcia (Liverpool), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), David Albelda (Valencia), Ruben Baraja (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal) Strikers: Fernando Torres (Atlético Madrid), Fernando Morientes (Liverpool), Raul (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia) in favorites | email this page
