Liverpool 3-2 Werder Bremen Pre-Season Friendly Result: Voronin Scores Brace For Reds & Riise Strike, Schindler & Darby Own-GoalSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Tue, 17/07/2007 - 21:24.
Liverpool FC have beaten Werder Bremen 3-2 in their pre-season friendly match in Grenchen, Switzerland on Tuesday evening. Andriy Voronin opened the scoring in the 4th minute, with Bremen equalising minutes later with a headed strike from Schindler, but with John Arne Riise restoring the first-half lead, smashing the ball home from 30-yards out in the 14th minute. The second-half saw Voronin secure his brace with a wonderful angled-strike, with a late own-goal from Liverpool defender Stephen Darby giving Werder Bremen late hopes of an equaliser. This was the second match in Liverpool’s pre-season warm-up schedule, with Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin scoring twice on only his second appearance for The Reds since his move from Bayer Leverkusen in June. His goal came after latching on to a slack back-pass from Werder Bremen and cutting through the defence and sliding the ball home. Schindler levelled for Bremen after a rebound from a save from Scott Carson, before John Arne Riise re-took the lead with a stunning long-range free-kick strike. The first-half ended 2-1 to Liverpool with The Reds looking dominant throughout the opening half. The second-half saw wholesale changes to the team with Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun both coming off the bench to make their debuts in the second-half, but Liverpool continued with their dominance. Voronin scored his second goal in the 61st minute with a superb side-footed strike at the near-post to make it 3-1. Werder Bremen had a goal disallowed for offside as they looked for an equaliser. Liverpool new-signing Fernando Torrres came on for Voronin in the 64th minute, with the Spanish striker having a couple of chances on goal, with Dirk Kuyt also coming close. Frank Löning came on as a substitute in the 84th minute and made an immediate impression, with his cross heading towards goal and Stephen Darby getting the last touch to score an own-goal to make it 3-2. The game finished 3-2, with Liverpool having given a debut to some of their new big-name summer signings and a decent friendly win to set them on their way to their friendly encounter against French Championnat Ligue 1 side Auxerre on Friday afternoon.
