Liverpool 2-0 Shanghai Shenhua Pre-Season Friendly: Fernando Torres Scores Debut For Liverpool, Skipper Gerrard With SecondSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 03/08/2007 - 19:25.
Liverpool have beaten Shanghai Shenhua 2-0 in their pre-season friendly at the De Kuip Stadium in The Rotterdam tournament on Friday afternoon, with goals from Fernando Torres and substitute Steven Gerrard. Liverpool new signing Fernando Torres started the match in attack alongside England striker Peter Crouch in the pre-season friendly and scored his debut for the club in the 13th minute of the match after a wonderful piece of interplay between Torres and fellow new signing Yossi Benayoun. Benayoun picked the ball up in the centre of midfield from Steve Finnan, with the former West Ham star sprinting towards the Shanghai defence, sliding the ball perfectly to Torres for the Spanish striker to clip the ball over Zhang Chen at close-range to make it 1-0 and score his debut goal for the club. Sebastian Leto and Lucas Leiva both also started the match for Liverpool and looked bright in midfield, with Mohamed Sissoko also showing his strength as Liverpool commanded possession in midfield in the first-half. Sun Xiang had a couple of attempts as the half came to a close, with David Martin also making a save with his feet to deny the Chinese team. After having commanded the early parts of the half, it finished 1-0 to Liverpool, who seemed to slack-off as the game came towards the break, giving Shanghai chances to come back into the game. Liverpool made no changes for the second-half, Diego Alonso had a free-kick in a dangerous area in the 54th minute, but it was easily gathered by David Martin. Peter Crouch and Mohamed Sissoko came off for Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel in the 62nd minute and the Liverpool skipper made his presence felt immediately, scoring just two minutes after coming on to the pitch. Gerrard snatched the ball on the edge of the penalty-area, turned the defender closest to him and chipped the ball superbly over Zhang Chen to double the score. Former Feyenoord favourite Dirk Kuyt came on for Fernando Torres in the 74th minute to rapturous applause from his former home-faithful, with Alvaro Arbeloa coming on for Steve Finnan. Every touch that Kuyt had was cheered vociferously, but the game had slowed significantly by this point and chances were few and far between for either side. The game finished 2-0 to Liverpool in what turned out to be a decent pre-season workout for Rafael Benitez’s team, with Liverpool due to face Dirk Kuyt's former club Feyenoord on Sunday in the mini-tournament. ************************************************************************ Liverpool Team: David Martin, Steve Finnan, Gabriel Paletta, Sami Hyypia, Emiliano Insua, Yossi Benayoun, Momo Sissoko, Lucas Leiva, Sebastian Leto, Peter Crouch, Fernando Torres.
