The Netherlands and Liverpool FC midfielder Boudewijn Zenden is due to be flown to the USA to have urgent surgery for a knee injury. The Dutchman was injured in Liverpool's Champions League encounter with Spanish La Liga side Real Betis, and has been ruled out of competitive play for the rest of the season.

Zenden, 29, suffered the knee injury in a Champions League tie against Real Betis on 23 November and it has since been realised that he has cruciate ligament damage.

The Dutchman has flown to the US to undergo surgery from renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who has treated a host of professional footballers, including former England captain Alan Shearer, and Brazilian striker Ronaldo.

This is deperately bad news for Zenden, who was just returning to form, and was looking to assure a place in Marco van Basten's 'Oranje' squad for the World Cup finals in Germany next Summer.
