Holland Keeper Edwin van der Sar Admits That 2007/08 Premiership Season May Be His Last With Manchester UnitedSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 19/07/2007 - 17:20.
Manchester United's Dutch International goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that the coming Premiership campaign may be his last at Old Trafford. The 36-year-old Oranje No.1 has his contract with The Red Devils end next June and he has acknowledged that he may be ousted from his regular first-team place by the end of the season. "I didn't have the same consistency at the end of the season as I had earlier in the season. I don't know why," said van der Sar to the team website. "I don't know what is going to happen at the end of the season. I am at a certain stage in my life when you just take it step-by-step," he said. The former Ajax, Juventus and Fulham FC keeper will start the 2007/08 Premiership campaign as the first choice keeper for the Red Devils as Ben Foster, who spent last season on-loan with Watford FC, will be out of action after he received a severe ligament injury. However Van der sar will have to face a stiff competition from Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak who has recently made a permanent move to Old Trafford after having spent one year on-loan for Manchester United from Championship side West Bromwich Albion. He continued: "When you are 28 you might sign a four-or-five year deal, it is the same when you are 21. I am not that age, so I am not worried about the situation. "When you reach my age, you have to take it like that both in terms of the club and the player. You must always try to keep the pleasure in your game. "When you don't have that 100% desire any more, you can stop or go to a lower level or whatever." He finished: "It is difficult to be 100% over the whole year," he stated. "There were a couple of things not to my satisfaction. Of course, you think about your mistakes, you analyse them. Then you have to get on with it." in favorites | email this page
