Holland Boss Marco van Basten Joins Sven In Calling For Later Deadline For Naming World Cup Squads

Netherlands coach Marco van Basten has joined England boss Sven Goran Eriksson in their appeals for a later deadline for naming their final squad’s for the World Cup finals in Germany this summer.

FIFA, the world soccer ruling body, has set the deadline at May 15 for each team to announce the squad but Marco van Basten has said that the current date would make things far harder for coaches to integrate their squads.

“The problem is that I can only see my players at their club and can't work with them myself,” van Basten was quoted as saying by the Dutch press agency ANP.

“I believe you can make your final choice if you have worked for a week or 10 days with each other.

“I would prefer it if I could leave my choice until one day before the tournament starts, though I understand that will be tough for the organisers,” he said.

England head coach Sven Goran Eriksson has also said this weekend that he was considering approaching FIFA to extend the deadline for the naming of the England squad for the World Cup Finals.
