Holland 2-1 Mexico - Bolton's Borgetti Opens For El Tri, Ajax Duo Seal Win For Oranje

Marco van Basten’s Dutch Oranje have beaten Mexico's El Tri 2-1 in their World Cup warm-up friendly at the 36,500-seater Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on Thursday.

Bolton Wanderers’ striker Jared Borgetti, playing in a solo attacking role during the first half, scored the opening goal in the 19th minute against a Netherlands second-choice team after Holland’s virtually complete first-choice team beat Cameroon 1-0 last Saturday.

Borgetti was left unmarked from a corner kick in the 19th minute and beat Dutch second-choice goalkeeper Henk Timmer with a header.

Mexico made a string of substitutions at half-time and that affected the Mexican’s momentum, and left a host of opportunities, which the Dutch were swift to pounce on.

The Oranje struck twice early in the second half, in the 52nd minute when Ajax Amsterdam defender John Heitinga tied the score when he headed Wesley Sneijder's corner kick past goalkeeper Osvaldo Sanchez.

Then his Ajax teammate Ryan Babel scored the winner off a pass from Liverpool and Newcastle transfer target Dirk Kuyt just five minutes later.

"We [have] used the last two matches to evaluate the players on this level," Head Coach van Basten told a news conference.

"I am pleased that this team beat a good World Cup competitor like Mexico.

"For us it is obvious that we have a strong squad...in a World Cup tournament the strength of your reserves will be very important."
