Guus Hiddink's PSV Eindhoven Makes Official Offer For Australia's and Melbourne Victory's Striker Archie ThompsonSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Sat, 07/01/2006 - 20:50.
Ending weeks of speculation about his footballing career, PSV Eindhoven have made an official offer to sign Socceroos striker Archie Thompson. Guus Hiddink had already expressed his concerns about the Australian international’s future. The player was keen to move to a European Club with more stiff competition as he wants more games on his feet to stay fit and convince Guus Hiddink to include him in the World Cup Finals Squad. He has already played in four out of Guus Hiddink’s five matches as the Socceroos manager. The transfer will be the first of its kind for an Australian playing in Australia’s A-League. Thompson will also play in this season’s UEFA Champions League tournament, being eligible to play as he hasn’t played in another European tournament. Archie Thompson’s possible transfer to PSV was the subject of a short interview with the player’s agent, John Grimaud. "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out it's a great move for Archie," Grimaud said. "If it was a lower league club, he wouldn't have thought about it. He'd have continued in Australia. But you can't deny him going to one of the giants of European football. He'll never get another chance like this." Melbourne Victory’s football operations manager Gary Cole did not disclose any details for the transfer. Dutch press reports however value the deal at approximately 600,000 euros. "It's good to finally have an offer on the table after all the speculation over the past week," Cole said. The PSV offer will be considered by the Melbourne Victory board and will be responded to in due course." in favorites | email this page
