Guimaraes Names 24-Man Preliminary Costa Rica Squad For World Cup - Veteran Wanchope In, Montero & De Lemos Miss-OutSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Tue, 02/05/2006 - 16:10.
Costa Rica head coach Alexandre Guimaraes has named a preliminary 24-man squad. Guimaraes has two notable absentees from Monday's announcement, both goalkeeper Adrian de Lemos and defender Christian Montero seem to have missed-out. Guimaraes has included injured defenders Harold Wallace and Michael Rodriguez, who now have two weeks to prove their fitness for the upcoming World Cup Finals in Germany. Wallace and Rodriguez are recovering from knee injuries, but striker Bryan Ruiz and defender Carlos Johnson - not included in Monday's announcement - were standing by if either is dropped before the final list of 23 players must be submitted to FIFA by May 15. Wallace and Rodriguez will continue to work with team doctors until then and will practice if fit. Ruiz and Johnson are expected to participate in the training sessions. “In coming days we will see if they can begin working out on the beach, and if they can't recuperate, then they won't go with us there or to the World Cup,” Guimaraes said of defenders Wallace and Rodriguez. “This is a list we've been studying in great detail based on the characteristics of our opponents.” Costa Rica have been drawn in Group B in the World Cup Finals, alongside the hosts Germany, Poland and Ecuador.
