World Cup Group G Match Preview - France v Switzerland, Ribery To Start, Thierry Henry Lone StrikerSubmitted by Matt Vance on Tue, 13/06/2006 - 01:02.
France play Switzerland in the second Group G match at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, Stuttgart, and coach Raymond Domenech believes his players are ready to show the world just what they can do. Since being crowned World and European champions in 1998 and 2000 respectively, France have disappointed in recent tournaments, but Domenech said his players are fully prepared. They will need to be, Switzerland are no pushovers as they proved in qualifying. "We've done some good work and are making good progress. Everyone's giving more and more in training," said Domenech. "We're counting on everyone to get fit to help us go as far as possible." Despite reports of a dispute between goalkeepers Fabien Barthez and Gregory Coupet, Domenech said morale was good in the French camp. "We want to create a good feeling so we can enter into the World Cup spirit. We want to take the plunge and not get into difficulties and if we do get into trouble, to try and put the mistakes right," continued the Les Bleus boss. "My objective is to get the players fit and raring to go so we can perform as a unit - not just the star players. "We can't blame the strikers for not scoring if our ball-winners are not providing us with the possession." Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele said he thinks France would be inspired to perform well following the broken leg striker Djibril Cisse suffered in the team's final warm-up game against China recently. "We feel he's still with us. We'll try to go as far as we can and he will get there with us, in a way," said Makelele. Domenech has opted to give the up-and-coming French star Frank Ribery in the starting line-up, with Arsenal's Thierry Henry playing as a lone striker supported by Ribery, Sylvain Wiltord and Zinedine Zidane. Switzerland coach Köbi Kuhn said his side have a 20% chance of beating France. The two sides met in qualifying, with Switzerland holding France to draws both home and away. "When we play against France we could play them 10 times and perhaps win twice, so we have to hope one of those wins will come on Tuesday," said Kuhn. "We have a young, hungry side that wants to show something." Kuhn admitted Arsenal’s Thierry Henry could have a major influence in Stuttgart saying: "Henry is one of the best strikers in the world, if not the best, and I see his inclusion as an important difference to the two qualifying matches (neither of which with Henry playing)." Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos - Henry's team-mate at Arsenal - said dealing with France's strikeforce could prove difficult. "I don't need to learn much about Henry as I know his game inside and out," said Senderos. "He plays instinctive football and you never know what he is going to do in the next moment. We must not make any easy mistakes in concentration as we would be brutally punished by the French." Defender Patrick Muller is the biggest concern for the Swiss because of an ankle injury. Arsenal youngster Johan Djourou is set to stand in. Senderos, Marco Streller and Valon Behrami have all recovered from minor knocks and are expected to play.
