Group C Full Time: Argentina 6 - 0 Serbia & Montenegro - 2 Goals From Rodriguez, With Tevez, Messi & Crespo All On-TargetSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 16/06/2006 - 15:55.
Argentina have annihilated Serbia and Montenegro 6-0 in their Group C match on Friday. Two goals from Maxi Rodriguez, Inter's Cambiasso, Chelsea's Hernan Crespo, Carlos Tevez and Barcelona's young star Lionel Messi all scored in the excellent show of football that the Albiceleste put up on Friday against a Serbian team that was reduced to 10-men for the majority of the second-half. Argentina’s Albiceleste started the match well in command, forcing a corner in the second minute, and pressing for an early goal. That goal came after just six minutes, with Maxi Rodriguez scoring after some lovely build up play from Argentina. Javier Saviola passed a lovely ball into Rodriguez’s path for him to unleash his shot past Dragolav Jevric in the Serbia and Montenegro goal. Luis Gonzalez was stretchered–off the pitch after seeming to pull a groin muscle in the 16th minute and was replaced by Inter Milan's Esteban Cambiasso. Serbia then managed to get an attack together, for the first real time in the match, but the Argentina defence held strong to deny them a clear chance at goal. Mateja Kezman had a run at goal halfway through the first-half, but was easily shepherded away for a goal-kick. Serbian defender Ognjen Koroman was treading a fine-line. After having been cautioned in the early part of the game- and now will be missing the game against Ivory Coast - he kept bringing players down just outside his penalty area and giving away some dangerous free-kicks. The Serbs were awarded a free-kick just outside the Argentina penalty area in the 26th minute, but was wasted. Both chances had half-chances to score, but it was the substitute Cambiasso that doubled the Albiceleste lead after one of the best passages of passing football ever seen in the World Cup Finals. A string of 24 passes went virtually unchallenged and finsished with Chelsea’s Hernan Crespo doing a lovely back-heel straight into the path of Cambiasso, who drilled it past Jevric and into the roof of the net. Argentina were rampant throughout the first-half and made their dominance pay in the last minutes of the half. Saviola made a great run into the penalty area and his shot was well saved by Jevric, but Maxi Rodriguez was there to knock the rebound into the net to make it 3-0. The second-half was much the same, with Argentina pressing for a fourth goal, but Serbia and Montenegro seemed more effective defensively and gave less space to Argentina on the ball. Their hopes of getting anything from the match were given a major blow in the 65th minute, with Serbian striker Mateja Kezman being sent-off for a two-footed lunge on Javier Mascherano, in what seemed like a harsh red-card from the referee on the former Chelsea striker. The ten-men could only hold-on from then on, with striker Savo Milosevic for Zvonomir Vukic minutes later, for a damage limitation exercise. Argentina were passing the ball around themselves, to the cheers of ‘Olé’ ringing around the stadium, but Serbia seemed quite content to let them have their space. Crespo made an incisive run through the Serbian defence in the 73rd, but had his penalty appeal waved away by the referee. Twice goalscorer Maxi Rodriguez was substituted for Barcelona’s young star Lionel Messi midway through the second-half. Messi was due to be coming back from injury for the last match, but he injured his foot and was even an injury doubt for today's match. Messi immediately made his mark, setting up Chelsea's Hernan Crespo, with a lovely crossed pass for Crespo to poke-in from close range to make it 4-0. The Serbs were now completely out of ideas, and Argentina pressed for a fifth goal. It came in the 83rd minute with Carlos Tevez tapping in an easy goal after the Serbian defence had yet again been penetrated. Messi finished the game off, scoring a sixth for the Albiceleste in the 88th minute with a lovely finish, between the keeper and the near-post, for a lovely debut goal in the World Cup Finals for the rising Barcelona star. in favorites | email this page
