Ghana Black Stars Squad For World Cup Finals - Chelsea's Essien Won't Be Joined By Rovers' AgogoSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 12/05/2006 - 18:16.
Ghana Black Stars head coach Ratomir Dujkovic has named the 23-man squad that will be travelling to the World Cup Finals in Germany. Ghana have been drawn in Group E in the World Cup Finals, alongside Italy, Czech Republic and the USA who begin their campaign against Italy in Hanover on June 12. The Ghana coach named four domestic-based players among 23-players selected for the World Cup squad - Accra’s Hearts of Oak's Dan Quaye, King Faisal's Habib Mohammed and Kumasi Asante Kotoko's Shilla Illiasu. Ashanti Gold goalkeeper Owu is the fourth Ghana-based player in the squad, which will travel to their first-ever World Cup Finals. Apart from Owu, who remains a regular in the Black Stars team, the three have played mainly in international friendly matches, where their services had only come in handy in the absence of some of the foreign-based players. Goalkeeper Sammy Adjei, who was the team's number one throughout the qualifiers will, no doubt, be the star-man in goal for the Black Stars. The Coach maintained only 10 players of the team that played at the last Nations Cup in Egypt, where the Stars bowed out at the group stage. Now, however, Dujkovic will have the services of three influential players he missed to injury at the Egypt tournament – Modena’s Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Ali Muntari from Udinese and Chelsea’s midfield star Michael Essien. Bristol Rovers striker Junior Agogo, who was called up by Ghana Black Stars boss Ratomir Dujkovic for a World Cup warm-up friendly against Nice this week was not named. Agogo, who has scored 18 goals from 44 starts for the League Two club this season, was called up to represent Ghana in a pre-World Cup friendly against Nice on Tuesday but failed to make the plane to Germany. Derek Boateng and Razak Pimpong are among the few players that, unlike Agogo, gained a last minute consideration into the squad. Dujkovic kept faith with midfielder Haminu Dramani even though he has not played for his Serbian club Red Star Belgrade for more than six months. The exclusion of strikers Isaac Boakye of the German side Arminia Bielefeld and Ibrahim Salou of the Belgian Cup finalist’s Zulte Waregem did not come as a surprise as both players are currently nursing injuries.
