Germany & Werder Bremen's Torsten Frings' World Cup In Question After Discovery Of Fracture

Germany midfielder Torsten Frings' World Cup hopes have been dealt a major blow after recent tests have revealed that he has broken his fibula.

The 29-year-old Werder Bremen midfielder injured his calf on March 18, but initial tests and x-rays failed to show any fracture.

However, more recent and thorough examinations have revealed a minor break which could put the Bremen midfielder's place in Germany's World Cup squad at risk.

The former Bayern Munich star has been advised to rest for at least 10 days, by which time it is hoped the injury will have corrected itself.

“It is not a normal break, but minor damage to the bone structure,” explained Werder Bremen’s club doctor Gotz Dimanski.

Frings has been ruled out of this weekend's Bundesliga clash with Schalke and is likely to miss Bremen's subsequent two league games against Duisburg and Cologne.

He is hoping that he could return for the final game of the season at Hamburg, but his match fitness will no doubt be in question, and this may mean that Germany head coach Jürgen Klinsmann may look elsewhere before he names his squad on May 15.
