Germany Legend Franz Beckenbauer Chastises Coach Klinsmann For Failing To Attend World Cup Coach Workshop & His US BasingSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Mon, 06/03/2006 - 20:48.
Franz Beckenbauer has blasted Germany coach Jürgen Klinsmann for his lack of commitment to the job of national team coach, furious at Klinsmann’s decision to fly back to his home in LA, rather than join a World Cup workshop. Klinsmann, already under fire after the German’s 4-1 loss to Italy last week in a warm-up friendly in Florence, flew back to his home in Los Angeles, where he is based. German World Cup legend Beckenbauer, rather than criticising Klinsmann for the dreadful performance against Italy, was furious that the Germany boss flew home to California instead of attending a workshop of World Cup coaches, which started on Monday. “The coach of the host country has to be there - that is beyond question. “If I have to think about this anymore my choice of words would be more drastic,” said a fuming Beckenbauer. Klinsmann has often been attacked for spending too much time in California, where the coach lives with his family, and many in Germany believe he should stay in Germany until the start of the World Cup on June 9. Beckenbauer then said it “doesn't make sense” to have to re-tell Klinsmann that he should be in Germany in the lead-up to the World Cup Finals. “I've often told him that he has to be in Germany more - now is the prime time,” said Beckenbauer. Since the Italian rout, German football officials have also said they might add three extra World Cup warm-up matches to their schedule in the run-up the World Cup, to give their struggling team more practice after their dismantling by the Italians. The loss to Italy came only 100 days before the World Cups starts, and has surpisingly prompted some German lawmakers to demand that Klinsmann appear before parliament to explain how he plans to win the country's fourth world title with his un-balanced squad. Germany’s largest daily newspaper, Bild, photographed Klinsmann arriving at Los Angeles airport and thoroughly rebuked him for returning to California instead of back to Germany with the squad. In the front-page article, Bild criticised Klinsmann for failing to attend the conference, where England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and Holland coach Marco van Basten will lead an effort to push back the May 15 deadline for naming the final World Cup squad lists. “Doesn't he have a bad conscience?” Questioned the Bild headline. Assistant coach Joachim Loew and team manager Oliver Bierhoff will instead represent Germany at the conference. The German Football Federation, Bundesliga officials and Bierhoff want to add three more World Cup warm-up matches. The team is already scheduled to play the United States, Japan and Colombia in the run-up to the Finals. However, they fully acknowledge how difficult it will be to convince top German clubs like Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen to release their players during the final weeks of the Bundesliga. in favorites | email this page
