Germany and Borussia Dortmünd defender Christoph Metzelder has torn a muscle in his right calf, an injury that will affect his chances of being picked by Germany coach Jürgen Klinsmann.

Dortmünd issued a statement on Wednesday saying Metzelder will miss Saturday's final game of the season away to the Bündesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Klinsmann will be announcing his final 23-man World Cup squad on Monday and Metzelede, who has struggled with a series of injuries since the 2002 World Cup Finals, was hoping to secure a place in the Germany squad.Now this latest injury have seiously damaged his preparations for the World Cup.

Germany begins its World Cup preparation Tuesday when the German team travel to Sardinia for their pre-World Cup training camp.
