Germany’s World Cup preparations have hit a massive set-back after Bayern Münich defender Philipp Lahm injured his elbow in a practice game against German amateur club-side Luckenwalde.

The experienced Bayern defender was taken to hospital after falling hard on his arm in the first-half of the 60-minute practice game.

Germany coach Jürgen Klinsmann spent much of the second half of the game, which Germany won 7-0, checking Lahm’s injury in the dressing room.

The World Cup hosts’ squad are flying out to Sardinia for a training camp on Tuesday evening and Klinsmann will is hoping that Lahm will be able to fly out with the rest of the team.

“We are taking Philipp Lahm to hospital to make sure his elbow is not broken,” said Klinsmann. “We don't know how serious it is yet but hope that he will be able to fly with us tonight to our training camp in Sardinia.”

The double-winning defender incurred the injury while he was racing towards the Luckenwalde goal and tripped over a defender, landing badly on his left arm.
