FYR Macedonia 2-1 Ecuador - Tenorio Opens For World Cup Finalist's, Matzov & Mitrevski For HostsSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sun, 28/05/2006 - 22:57.
World Cup finalist’s Ecuador have been beaten by Macedonia 2-1 in their World Cup warm-up friendly match on Sunday. Luis Fernando Suarez’s Ecuador took the lead in the 18th minute when Quatari club Al Sadd's striker Carlos Tenorio beat several defenders and coolly shot past the keeper. But Macedonia equalized 10 minutes later when striker Goran Maznov took advantage of defensive uncertainty in the Ecuadorean defence to draw the European minnows level. Ecuador coach Suarez made four changes at the start of the second half and an injury to Tenorio in the 64th minute forced the Ecuador boss to substitute him. However, his team conceded the winning goal just eight minutes later when Igor Mitrevski converted a penalty after Ivan Hurtado had fouled in the area. Ecuador who, last Wednesday drew 1-1 with Colombia, battled hard for an equalizer, with El Nacional midfielder Segundo Castillo hitting the bar with a header and substitute Ivan Kaviedes from Argentinos Juniors missing from close range. Ecuador will be making their second World Cup Finals appearance and have been drawn in Group A, alongside Poland, Costa Rica and hosts Germany.
