France Captain Zidane Gets Red Card for Head-Butting Materazzi in the World Cup Final Against Italy

France captain Zinedine Zidane has been sent-off in the final of the World Cup Finals after head-butting Marco Materazzi in the chest in the second-half of extra time.

The game went into extra-time 1-1 after two first-half goals, with Zidane opening the scoring from the penalty-spot, and Marco Materazzi levelling for the Azzurri in the 19th minute.

The game heated-up as the second-half of extra-time progressed, with the tension becoming too much for France captain Zinedine Zidane when he suddenly headbutted Marco Materazzi in the chest.which, after a period of confusion between the referee and his linesmen, who failed to see the incident, had to get confirmation from the fourth official before sending off the talismanic French captain.

34-year-old Zidane, who is retiring from football completely after the World Cup, was sent-off as the game heated-up as the second-half of extra-time progressed, with the tension becoming too much for Zidane when he suddenly headbutted Marco Materazzi in the chest.

This was initially un-noticed by the referee which, after a period of confusion between the referee and his linesmen, the referee had to get confirmation from the fourth official before sending off the talismanic French captain.
