France & Barcelona's Giuly Feels He Deserves To Make Les Bleus Squad, Scoring In 1-0 Win Over AC MilanSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 19/04/2006 - 17:35.
France and Barcelona midfielder Ludovic Giuly is determined to make Raymond Domenech’s World Cup squad after increased speculation that the national coach could turn to Marseille's rising star Franck Ribery instead. The 29-year-old attacking midfielder started his first Champions League game since December 7 in Tuesday's semi-final first-leg encounter with AC Milan and showed his class, scoring the only goal of the game. Ronaldinho prised open the Milan defence in the 57th minute for the France hopeful to score a vital away goal in the game in the San Siro. The Brazilian superstar held off Italy defender Gattuso before clipping a ball through for Giuly and the Frenchman raced onto the pass before lashing a left-footed volley past Brazilian keeper Dida from a tight angle. Giuly, the only Barcelona player to have played in a Champions League final - with Monaco in 2004, was out to impress the France head coach and highlighted the need for his place in the squad. One month before Domenech announces his 23-man final squad for the World Cup, Giuly is convinced he deserves his ticket to Germany. “I would not understand if I was not selected to go to the World Cup,” Giuly told L'Equipe before the match on Tuesday. “Whether I am replaced by Ribery or any other player, I would feel that way. “The most important thing for me is to be there and I will fight for my place until the end. “I don't consider the match against AC Milan as one final opportunity for me to show my potential to the national coach. “My qualities have not changed and I am confident in my abilities.” Giuly has 17 caps for Les Bleus, but has not been called up since October 2005. Meanwhile, the Frenchman says he has yet to receive an offer of a new contract from Barcelona, despite interest from a number of other clubs. Giuly, who joined the Spanish giants from Monaco in 2004, has one year left to run on his current deal. “I have received a lot of offers from France and elsewhere but none from Barca,” he added. “Anything can happen, we will see.” in favorites | email this page
