Former Manchester City midfielder and ex-US international captain Claudio Reyna on Wednesday signed a contract with the Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.

The 33-year-old Reyna, whose contract with Stuart Pearce’s City was terminated yesterday following mutual agreement following the player’s wish to return home, will now reunite with Bruce Arena, his former coach at the University of Virginia and USA.

“I am very excited to be coming back to play at home, minutes from where I grew up,” Reyna said.

Reyna retired from international soccer after last year's World Cup. He scored eight goals in 112 appearances and was in the US team for the 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

Reyna played club football at Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg in Germany, Glasgow Rangers in Scotland and Sunderland. He joined Manchester City in 2003 and scored four goals in 77 games including 15 games this season.

“Claudio is a proven player at the highest levels in the game, and his experience and leadership skills will improve our team,” Arena said.
