Former Japan captain Tsuneyasu Miyamoto is poised to join Austria's Salzburg, J-League club Gamba Osaka said on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old defender, who captained Japan at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, has agreed terms for a long-awaited move to Europe, according to Gamba officials.

Miyamoto was once a target for English Premier League club West Ham United as well as Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

A permanent fixture under former Japan coach Zico, Miyamoto has not played for the national team since the Brazilian was replaced by Ivica Osim following this year's World Cup.
