Former Arsenal Striker Quincy Owusu-Abeyie Refuses Chance To Play In World Cup With Ghana - Instead Hoping To Get Dutch Call-UpSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 09/03/2006 - 16:14.
Quincy Owusu-Abeyie has turned down an approach from Ghana’s Black Stars to play for them at the upcoming World Cup Finals, instead, telling reporters that he is setting his sights on winning senior cap for the Dutch national side. The 20-year-old former Arsenal striker, who recently signed for Spartak Moscow, was born in the Netherlands and played for the Dutch under-20 side at last year's World Youth Championships. Ghana hoped to get him to commit to their World Cup campaign by changing his international status under FIFA regulations, which allow players aged under 21 who have been capped at junior level by one country to then switch to play at senior level for another country. Owusu-Abeyie said his decision was based on the fact he was confident he would get a future chance to play at the World Cup Finals with the Dutch Oranje team. “Holland practically qualify every four years while Ghana have only made it for the first time,” said Owusu-Abeyie. “So while I won't be at Germany 2006, I'm sure I will get a chance in the future,” finished the Spartak striker. in favorites | email this page
