Soccer legend George Best is today said to be "In the final hours of his life" in hospital in London. He is with his family at his bedside, and has been visited by his closest friends, including Portsmouth Chairman Milan Mandaric, and former Manchester United team-mates Bobby Charlton, and Dennis Law.

The legendary Northern Ireland and Manchester United striker was re-admitted to intensive care last Friday, just nine days after leaving the IC Unit, with a "new and severe" infection, and in a statement this afternoon, his specialist at the Cromwell Hospital confirmed that the internal bleeding was too severe to respond to treatment.

In an statement this afternoon, his specialist at the exclusive West London hospital where George Best was admitted seven weeks ago, Professor Roger Williams, confirmed that Best's health had deteriorated, and that he was no longer responding to treatment, and that "There is nothing more that the medical staff can do."

"I can't be precise at this time... but I would be very surprised if he survives another 24 hours." said Prof. Williams.

"There is really no return from that situation, he is still alive, and still having medical care and treatment, but I have to tell you that his hours are numbered."

Best was first admitted into the intensive care unit with a chest infection and internal bleeding in early October,
