FIFA World Cup European Qualifying - Group 7 Overview
Serbia and Montenegro moved a step closer to the FIFA World Cup finals next summer, thanks to a 1-1 draw against Europe Zone Group 7 rivals Spain on Wednesday.
Spain took an early lead from Raul's header after 18 minutes, but the visitors salvaged a point, and retained pole position at the head of the group, with an equaliser from Mateja Kezman on 68 minutes. The draw means that Serbia and Montenegro lead Group 7 with 16 points from their eight games, and just two matches left to play, while Spain are one point behind, and face the possibility of having to qualify through the play-offs.
Serbia and Montenegro now have an away match in Lithuania on the 8th of October followed by a home encounter with Balkans rivals Bosnia-Herzegovina four days later, while Spain have away games in Belgium and San Marino on the same dates.
Elswhere in the group,Bosnia-Herzegovina are still well placed following their 1-0 defeat of Lithuania,Bosnia started the Group 7 match a point ahead of their opponents as both sought to stay in touch with the leaders.
