FIFA World Cup 2006 European Qualifying Groups and How They Work

Submitted by Neville Nixon on Tue, 28/06/2005 - 13:56.

How European qualification works:
The EIGHT winners of the European qualifying groups will automatically qualify for the 2006 Fifa World Cup finals in Germany.

The best TWO runners-up will also qualify for the finals which will be played during June and July 2006 in Germany.

The other six second-placed teams will then be paired off to play each other over two-legged play-offs for the remaining THREE places at the finals.

Hosts Germany are the only country who do not have to qualify for the event.
