FIFA have decided to appoint Argentina’s Horacio Elizondo as the referee for Sunday's World Cup final against Italy's Azzurri and France's Les Bleus in Berlin.

Elizondo was the referee for the England v Portugal match, in which Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was sent-off during England's quarter final defeat to the Portuguese last weekend.

The Argentinean referee sent Rooney off for appearing to stamp on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho and also for a vague push to his Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Elizondo came in for some criticism for his performance in the England game for failing to take any action on Portugal's play-acting throughout the match.

Elizondo will be making his fifth appearance at the World Cup Final in Berlin after having already refereed four matches, including the opening game of the tournament between Germany and Costa Rica.
