Feyenoord 1-1 Liverpool Rotterdam Tournament: Royston Drenthe & Steven Gerrard Score In Tense Match - FC Porto Win TrophySubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sun, 05/08/2007 - 22:04.
Liverpool have drawn 1-1 with Feyenoord in their pre-season friendly match in the Port of Rotterdam Tournament at the De Kuip Stadium on Sunday, with FC Porto winning the mini-tournament ahead of Liverpool on goal-difference. Former Feyenoord favourite Dirk Kuyt started the match for Liverpool, playing alongside new signing Andriy Voronin. Feyenoord new signings Roy Makaay and former Arsenal midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst both started for Feyenoord, alongside Holland Under-21 star Royston Drenthe. Liverpool looked to have taken the lead when Voronin played a through ball to fellow striker Dirk Kuyt, whose shot smashed off the crossbar, over the line and out of goal, but the linesman and referee failed to see the ball cross the line and waved Liverpool's protests away. It was Holland Under-21 star Royston Drenthe, who scored a superb opening goal in the last minute of the first-half. Drenthe picked-up the ball on the edge of the six-yard-box from a rebound off the post from a shot from Andwélé Slory, smashing the ball into the net to make it 1-0 to the hosts. The second half saw Liverpool pushing hard for an equaliser and it was Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard who levelled in the 72nd minute. Gerrard received a square pass from Ryan Babel, he skipped past two defenders and finished clinically past Sherif Ekramy to level the scores. Feyenoord were awarded a contentious penalty late in the second-half, but it was saved by Reina to keep the scores level. The tense encounter ended with players from both teams squaring up to each other, with the referee brandishing yellow cards for the incidents, but nothing more. Portuguese side FC Porto won the tournament on goal difference over Liverpool, who came second, with Feyenoord finishing third and Shanghai finishing fourth.
