Former West Ham and Celtic striker Paolo Di Canio has left SS Lazio, the club he has supported since he was a child, and has signed a one-year contract with Italian Serie C2 (fourth division) club Cisco Roma.

37-year-old Di Canio, who also played in Britain for West Ham, Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic, has spent the last two seasons with Lazio, but has reluctantly made the move across the city to Cisco Roma.

Cisco Roma was founded in 2004 after the merger of A.S. Lodigiani and Cisco Calcio Roma. A.S. Lodigiani has the reputation having one of the finest Italian youth systems and has nurtured such talents as Luigi Apolloni, AS Roma captain Francesco Totti, Valerio Fiori, and Emiliano Moretti, with Fiorentina and Azzurri World Cup star Luca Toni also having featured for the club in 97/98 season.

Cisco Roma's general director Pietro Leonardi said: “To have a player like Di Canio in our side is simply extraordinary.”

Di Canio, was considering a move to Australia as his career comes to an end, but decided to stay in his home city, saying: “I had offers from Spain, from England and Australia.

“I was all ready to continue my playing career in Australia until Moreno Roggi, my agent, called me with this offer from Cisco Roma,” Di Canio was quoted as saying.
