Middlesbrough are still searching for a new manager after it was reported on Friday night that former England and Barcelona manager Terry Venables has turned down the opportunity to succeed former manager Steve McClaren at the Riverside.

Steve McClaren, who succeeds Sven Goran Eriksson as England head coach after the World Cup Finals, is thought to be hoping to have the experienced 63-year-old as his senior advisor in the England set-up.

It is understood detailed talks have taken place between the club and Venables, ex-Charlton boss Alan Curbishley as well as former Leicester City and Celtic manager Martin O'Neill.

Even though it is known that Middlesbrough are already in talks with more than one prospective manager, if Venables has now ruled himself out of contention, Martin O'Neill will replace him as the odds-on favourite to take over at The Riverside.
