Everton's Tim Cahill has scored Australia's first-ever goal in the World Cup Finals in the Socceroos' Group F win against Japan on Monday.

It came from a free-kick in the 83rd minute, with Harry Kewell stepping over the ball and leaving John Aloisi to shoot through the legs of the wall and forcing a fine save.

The resulting throw-in saw Tim Cahill score Australias first ever goal in the World Cup Finals, with Cahill picking up the ball after Japanese keeper Kawaguchi fumbled the ball and the Everton star struck the ball through the melee to score the equaliser.

Cahill became a national hero just two minutes before the final whistle when he scored Australias second goal with a longe-range strike that went in off the post, with Kawaguchi left with no chance.

The Socceroos then sealed the victory when John Aloisi broke through the tired Japan defence, finishing beautifully to win the game 3-1 for Guus Hiddinks team in a thrilling Group F encounter.
