Europe Group 7 Preview: Spain, Croatia and Serbia & Montenegro Can Still Qualify. Spain's 'Furia Roja' Hope For Serb Slip.Submitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 12/10/2005 - 15:26.
In Group Seven, three teams, Spain, Croatia and Serbia and Montenegro are still in contention to win the group. Serbia & Montenegro on 19 points, go into their final game at home with Bosnia-Herzegovina, holding a two-point lead over Spain just two points behind 17 points, which is expected to beat bottom-placed San Marino. The Serbs will top the group with a win but if they draw, Spain can overtake them by winning by at least a five goal margin in San Marino. Bosnia-Herzegovina are third on 16 points, just only one point the Spaniards, and could slip past Spain if they draw, or lose, and if the Croatian’s defeat Serbia & Montenegro. If Serbia Montenegro win this match, they´ll qualify for the World Cup 2006 finals next year. But, if they lose, and Spain win they will fail to qualify, Spain would top the group, and Bosnia will qualify as the runners up of the group. The fact is though, that it is highly unlikely that San Marino will mange to hold the Spanish, so a win for either Serbia and Montenegro or Croatia is a necessity. Technically, the Serbia & Montenegro team are better than the Croatians. They have a good attack and their defence has only conceded 1 goal in the whole qualifying campaign. On the other side, Bosnia’s defence is poor, having conceded 8 goals so far, and only scored 12 goals. Serbia-Montenegro’s star player, Kezman is having the best performance’s of his career after leaving Chelsea, so he, more than anyone else is likely to score. All Spain can do is go to San Marino, get the result, and hope that the game in Serbia ends in a draw. It is unthinkable for the Spanish NOT to qualify for the World Cup Finals. It would be the first time since 1974 that Spain’s ‘Furia Roja’ would be absent from a World Cup Finals. in favorites | email this page
