Bayern Munich’s Owen Hargreaves, who deputised for Gary Neville at right-back, replaces Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick, with England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson sticking to his favoured 4-5-1 formation, with Rooney playing the lone striker role.

Portugal head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is without Barcelona playmaker Deco and defensive midfielder Costinha because of suspension, but the Portuguese will be lifted by the news that Manchester United playmaker Cristian Ronaldo has shaken off his injury and starts the game.
