England Coach Sven Goran Eriksson Defends Squad Strikers DecisionSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Wed, 21/06/2006 - 10:20.
England's coach Sven-Goran Eriksson played down fears that his decision to only include four strikers in the England World Cup squad would not spell trouble for the remaining World Cup matches. With Michael Owen injured and Wayne Rooney still trying to get back to his previous fitness, the Swedish coach faces the prospect of not being able to field the top strikers in the team, as some are injured, others are recovering and some have already one yellow card in the tournament. Sven-Goran Eriksson said that England are not lacking any striking power, even with Owen ruled-out because of injury and Wayne Rooney struggling to regain his fitness prior to the broken metatarsal injury he suffered back in April. "I’m sorry about Owen. But we have Walcott.. And Gerrard and Joe Cole scored fantastic goals," Eriksson said when asked about what his plans were with one of his four strikers injured and with Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard risking suspension as they have already been booked once. Eriksson wanted to rest Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch in last night's match against Sweden, however things got worse on the pitch, with the Swedes threatening to take the lead and the England manager had to make drastic changes. Seeing Michael Owen being carried out the pitch with a clear indication about the severity of his injury, Eriksson substituted him with Peter Crouch. However, the team did not do well and despite the wonderful goal by Chelsea's Joe Cole, Sweden looked increasingly threatening and England just couldn't create any serious chances. Overall, the three group matches for the England national football team failed to meet fans' expectations, despite the positive results and that England finished top of it's group. in favorites | email this page
