England Captain and Real Madrid Midfielder David Beckham Says England Deserves Luck to Win TrophySubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Mon, 26/12/2005 - 18:40.
In an interview with BBC Radio Five Live, England's captain said that his team deserve more luck in next summer's World Cup tournament in Germany. Speaking about what will happen if England face Brazil in the knockout stage, Becks said that "we've got that English mentality of never say die", sending a strong message to Carlos Alberto Parreira's team that England has chances of winning. England's captain has experienced Brazilian football, as many of his team-mates are of Brazilian origin. Ronaldo (Ronaldo Luíz Nazario de Lima), Robinho (Robson de Souza), Julio Baptista, Roberto Carlos (Roberto Carlos da Silva) and David Beckham are team-mates in Real Madrid. "You need luck, something we didn't have in the last two competitions when we scored goals that weren't allowed," David Beckham said, referring to Sol Campbell's "off side" goals in the Euro 2004 and the World Cup 2002 Korea/Japan. "Brazil are the best team in the world. They've some of the best players in the world - I'm lucky to play with them and I know how good they are. But we're quietly confident if we come up against teams like that." Referring to England's dramatic win in an international friendly game against Argentina in Switzerland, Beckam said that "That win finished the year off well for the national team and the manager. Argentina are rated the second best team in the world and they've got some great players like Riqueleme. If we play like that and get the luck we need and stick together then who knows?" "The confidence was sky high after the game, so we're quietly confident if we come up again teams like that we've got that English mentality of never say die." in favorites | email this page
