England 2 - 0 Trinidad & Tobago - Liverpool's Crouch & Gerrard Get Late Winners For England's Three LionsSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 15/06/2006 - 18:55.
England have scored two late goals from Liverpool team-mates Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard to beat Trinidad and Tobago's Warriors 2-0 in their Group B match on Thursday. Jamie carragher had a weak shot in the opening minutes that was easily dealt with by Hislop. A cross from Crouch in the 6th minute saw Frank Lampard’s shot deflected by Hislop, with Michael Owen failing to pick-up the loose ball. England really pushed in the openbing part of the game, with T&T’s Dennis Lawrence - a defender of the same height of the 6’7” England striker Peter Crouch - The Warriors had their first chance in the 10th minute with Dwight yorke’s shot being easily saved by Dennis Lawrence was immense in defence for The Warriors, clearing three goal attempts from The Three Lions, but it was all England in the opening period. Peter Crouch had a great chance in the 15th minute, with a cross from Ashley Cole Densil Theobald conceded a free-kick, and a yellow-card, in the 18th minute, but Beckham’s free-kick hit the wall and was cleared. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was taken down by Aurtis Whitley just seconds later, for T&T’s second yellow-card of the match, but yet again it was Lawrence who was the man that shepherded the ball to safety. Although England were dominant in possession, they just couldn’t find their final passing and, halfway through the first-half the Warriors started to find their feet. Carlos Edwards had a great chance to place a cross into the penalty area, but no-one was there to meet it. Steven Gerrard had a shot on-goal stopped by T&T captain Dwight Yorke, who unfortunately took the ball right between the legs, which laid the ex-Manchester United striker out for a couple of minutes. England, who had Wayne Rooney announced as match-fit for the match, saw the predatory striker warming-up as the half progressed, with signs that the Manchester United star would be brought on at some point. Beckham’s corners were being stifled by the T&T defence, who were playing excellently, with Brent Sancho playing alongside Lawrence well. Lampard had a shot on goal go just wide in the 34th minute, but was well covered by Shaka Hislop. A free-kick from T&T on the break forced a corner from England after Kenwyne Jones’ shot was deflected, and England keeper Paul Robinson, being tested for the first real time, missed the ball completely, but Stern John failed to get his header on-target into the open corner of the goal. Jones had another chance from a free-kick, but his header went over the bar. Lampard had another chance after Owen brought the ball down and passed to him for a volley in the box, but his shot went well high. The pressure was all from England in the closing minutes of the half. Peter Crouch was given a golden opportunity to open the score-line when Beckham placed a perfect cross for him to volley in front of goal, the Liverpool striker was way off-target. England continued their dominance in the second-half, but Trinidad and Tobago were defending extremely well, and always showing a threat on the break. Michael Owen had a perfect chance go just inches from the post early in the second-half, just before he was replaced by Wayne Rooney, with his former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher being subbed by Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon in the 58th minute. Rooney had not played since breaking his metatarsal in a match against Manchester United in April, but has made a remarkable recovery in order to feature for England's Three Lions in Germany. Both Lennon and Rooney immediately stepped up the pace of the England attack, but as yet (66 min) the T&T defence has held strong and denied England a clear goalscoring opportunity in the half. Crouch had another great chance to open the scoring in the 66th minute, from a cross by the England captain Beckham, but Crouch was defended well by Brent Sancho and his header went wide. Cornell Glen came on for Kenwyne Jones in the 69th minute, which gave The Warriors some confidence and Glenn had a shot blocked by Ashley Cole in the 73rd minute. England then had the space to attack on the break, and had a host of chances missed by Frank Lampard, who just couldn’t find his shooting-boot’s. England finally broke the deadlock in the deadlock with an 81st minute strike from Liverpool striker Peter Crouch. Crouch had a few great chances to open the scoring, and had a golden opportunity in the 66th minute, from a cross by the England captain Beckham, but Crouch was defended well by Brent Sancho and his header went wide. He made no mistake though in the last ten minutes of time, when he rose excellently to head a goal past West Ham keeper Shaka Hislop in the 81st minute to give England's Three Lions the lead. His Liverpool team-mate and captain Steven Gerrard sealed the win with a beautiful left-footed strike from 30-yards that flew past Hislop and gave England the win. in favorites | email this page
