With less than three months before the World Cup kicks off in Germany, Ecuador head coach Luis Suarez's national team management has hit a serious crisis with the arrest of its team manager on suspicion of human trafficking.

Vincio Luna was charged on Wednesday with trying to smuggle two fake members of the Ecuador national football team into the US, media reports have said.

Luna, who works under the Ecuador national coach Luis Suarez, was reported to have received between $9,400 and $13,000 for attempting to bring the so-called players into the US.

Luna, a retired military officer, is denying the charges. He has also received backing from the president of the Ecuador Football Association, Luis Chiriboga, who said he would “put his hand in the fire” in his support for Luna, who has been the team manager for the national team for the past eight years.

Francisco Acosta, the Ecuador Football Association secretary, has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Luna.
