South Africa hopes to have the Livingstone midfielder in it's ranks for the June qualifying matches, while at the same time Walter Smith, Scotland's new coach, has hinted that there is a call-up for the 23 year old. Solution to this dispute will be ultimately given by FIFA.

O'Brien was granted South African citizenship this month, as he was born in South Africa. Stuart Baxter hinted that "There is a precedent for this, with several Moroccan players who had previously played for the Dutch junior national team also applying before the deadline but only passing on the paperwork to Fifa afterwards".

Baxter is in Scotland today to watch O'Brien play with Livingstone against Dunfermline Athletic for the Scottish Premier League.
