Liverpools Dietmar Hamann Retires From International Football After Germany Snub

Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has announced his decision to retire from international football after being overlooked by Germany coach Jürgen Klinsmann in his World Cup squad.

Hamann earned a total of 59 caps and scored five goals for Germany, without doubt the most famous of these being the last ever goal scored at the old Wembley Stadium when Germany beat England 1-0 in a rainy World Cup qualifier in October 2000.

Hamann made his international debut against South Africa in 1997, in 2002 he played for Germany in the World Cup finals in Japan/Korea, with his last appearance was against Holland in an international friendly last August.

The 32-year-old was also an Champions League winner last year and also won the FA Cup with Liverpool earlier this May, but admitted that he wasn’t expecting to be chosen by Klinsmann.

"It's not really a big surprise to me I wasn't in the squad," said Hamann on www.liverpoolfc.tv.

“I haven't spoken to the manager [Klinsmann] for the last three months, so I didn't think there was much chance of me being included.

“That's it for me now at international level. I'm 32 now and this would have been my last tournament.”
