Denmark's Dramatic 3-3 Comeback In EURO Qualifier May Be Ruled-Out After Referee Walks Off Pitch - UEFA To Investigate

Denmark's Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden was abandoned after 89 minutes after a fan tried to attack the referee, with UEFA saying that the 3-3 result will not be confirmed until their disciplinary committee has read both the referee's and their own delegate's reports of the match in Copenhagen.

Sweden had raced to a 3-0 lead inside the first half hour, with Johan Elmander scoring a brace on either side of Petter Hansson goal to the delight of the visiting fans.

But the home side showed great resolve to fight back to level terms, with Liverpool defender Daniel Agger initiating their comeback with a goal in the 34th minute.

The second-half saw Jon Dahl Tomasson and Leon Andreasen Andreasen complete the fightback for the Danes.

But it was in the 89th minute that the incident occurred. Referee Herbert Fandel sent off Denmark defender Christian Poulsen, which saw a spectator run towards the referee, only to be intercepted by Danish players.

The referee, who was also in charge of the Champions League final last month, which saw AC Milan beat Liverpool 2-1, walked off the pitch and it is now down to UEFA, who say the result will not be confirmed until their disciplinary committee has come to a conclusion, which could see Sweden awarded with a 3-0 win, which would take them to the top of Group F, which is currently led by Northern Ireland.

I just want to point out two things. Sweden was also awarded a penalty that would probobly given them a 4-3 win. And Sweden is going to lead the group whatever descision is made. But anything but 3 points for sweden would be impossible. So there is no doubt the game will end 0-3. And three points for sweden.

OUCH!

Most danes will probably accept a loss here, and the logical way to do it is judging the game a 0-3 victory for Sweden - but DAMN that feels hard. I know we will probably also loose home-court and/or spectators for some time, but with a loss and such an abominable goal statistic our chances in this qualifier are slim and that is going to be hard for us to accept (not that it matters...). It'll also likely hurt future UEFA standing - and subsequently our seeding in future tournaments.

I dunno if I have much of a point here, except to say how much this sucks. Goddamn idiot spoiling one of our greatest comebacks (ignoring that damn stupid penalty - if anyone should've been attacked it should have been Poulsen).
