Czech Republic Midfielder Libor Sionko Signs Deal With RangersSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 17/05/2006 - 16:06.
Czech Republic midfielder Libor Sionko has completed his free transfer move to Glasgow Rangers after having turned down offers "from a number of top teams". The former Austria Vienna player has signed a three-year deal with the Scottish giants after passing a medical on Tuesday. The 29-year-old becomes the second signing for Rangers - since Paul Le Guen became the new manager at Ibrox - after the capture of Dean Furman from Chelsea last week. Sionko, who is a standby player for the Czech Republic World Cup squad along with Hearts midfielder Rudi Skacel, cannot wait to launch his career with the Light Blues next season. And he insists, despite interest in his services from elsewhere, his heart was set on Glasgow after hearing of the Gers' offer. Sionko told the club's official website: "It is a great privilege to join Rangers and I am eager to begin my new life in Scotland. "I know I have signed for a massive club with many supporters and I can't wait to play in front of them at Ibrox next season. "I had many offers from a number of top teams, but, once I learned Rangers were interested, my mind was made up. "I am also looking forward to working with Paul Le Guen, he is a very experienced manager and can help me develop as a player." Former Lyon boss Le Guen was delighted to have captured a player whose progress he had been tracking for years. He added: "Libor is a player I have known about for a few years and I am delighted he will be joining me at Rangers next season. "He has signed a three-year contract and I look forward to working with him during that time. I am sure he can add something to the Rangers team." Sionko has signed on a Bosman free with the Glasgow giants after helping Austria Vienna to the Austrian league championship. He started his career with hometown team Banik Ostrava before moving to Sparta Prague in 1999 where he won two consecutive titles and played against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2003. in favorites | email this page
