Czech Republic and Aston Villa midfielder Patrick Berger is returning to match fitness, hopefully in time for him to reach Karel Brueckner's Czech Republic squad in time for the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Berger has returned to training with Aston Villa’s reserves, and is due to appear for the reserves against Sunderland this week for his first match in nearly four months after the player had been suffering with a troublesome knee injury.

"Patrik started training last Monday and has come through the week well," said Villa manager David O'Leary about the former Liverpool star.

“We've got a reserve game on Wednesday against Sunderland, and, if he continues to progress the way he is, we will be able to introduce him.”
