Czech Mate? Petr Cech Out For Czech Republic-European Group 1 Qualifiers

Submitted by Neville Nixon on Tue, 06/09/2005 - 18:04.

Injury hit Czech Republic, have recalled Sparta Prague's Lukas Zelenka for their European Zone Group One qualifier against Armenia on Wednesday.

The Czechs could well be without the services of injured midfielders Tomas Rosicky and Tomas Galasek, although Galasek (knee injury) could play a part in Wednesday's match. Rosicky, (groin injury), is very doubtful. Enormously adding to the team's problems, first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech of Chelsea and left back Marek Jankulovski are also ruled out.

Chelsea keeper Cech left the squad to recover from a shoulder injury, while AC Milan's Jankulovski has twisted his recently operated on ankle. Cech's loss is acutely felt, as the Team rely on his safe and immaculate handling in order to play further up the pitch. Sparta Prague keeper Jaromir Blazek is expected to start in his place.

There are no such fears for striker Milan Baros, even though he sat out training, but the Czechs, who lost 2-0 on Saturday, cannot afford another bad display if they are to remain in contention for a spot in Germany 2006. They trail second-placed Romania by a point in their group, but have two matches in hand.It is now or never for the Czechs, their coach said "Defeat is unthinkable, it would be disastrous"
