Croatia v Australia Match Preview - Socceroos Need Draw To Progress, Croatia Without Kovac But Out For Win In World Cup Group FSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 22/06/2006 - 18:49.
Croatia’s Vatreni face Australia’s Socceroos in their last Group F match in Stüttgart, with both teams in with a chance of making the last sixteen in the World Cup Finals. Socceroos head coach Guus Hiddink has named FC Basel’s newly signed attacking midfielder Mile Sterjovski to start the match for Australia, with only Tony Popovic ruled-out after suffering a calf injury. Although you never know, it is unlikely that Japan will defeat Brazil in their match, so Australia will only need a draw to progress, whereas Croatia need a win to reach the last 16, and are yet to score in the tournament. For Croatia, Ivica Olic has recovered from a leg injury and will be available to play, while defender Stjepan Tomas comes in for Robert Kovac who is suspended for the match. Croatia head coach Zlatko Kranjcar, speaking via an interpreter to reporters, thinks they will do well in their match against the Socceroos, making two changes to their team for the World Cup Group F clash with Australia. “We will play the same way we did against Brazil and Japan,” said Kranjcar. “We will play offensively and just hope the players take their chances better than the two games before,” continued the 59-year-old former Croatia star. “Our style is to attack and try and dominate the game, and that's what we will be doing. But we have to be careful, they [Australia] are a very good team.” in favorites | email this page
