CONMEBOL South America Zone qualifying match results:

Paraguay 0 : 1 Colombia
Uruguay 1 : 0 Argentina
Chile 0 : 0 Ecuador
Brazil 3 : 0 Venezuela
Peru 4 : 1 Bolivia

Uruguay won their game against Argentina's 'Albiceleste' with a single goal from Inter Milan's Alvaro Recoba that rewarded Uruguay the play-off berth on offer for the fifth-placed team.

Uruguay went into the final round of games one point clear of rivals Colombia and Chile, and their narrow victory was enough to seal fifth place. They now meet Australia's 'Socceroos' over two legs for a World Cup spot.

Colombia almost had their play-off place sealed, they won 1-0 away to 4th placed Paraguay, who had already qualified, and would have progressed themselves had Uruguay not won.

Peru beat Bolivia 4-1, in the only match that was played for pride in the group zone and Chile, who also had no chance of qualification, drew 0-0 at home to Ecuador.

Brazil beat Venezuela 3-0 to finish on top of the South American qualifying table, with Argentina second, Ecuador third and Paraguay fourth.

Uruguay, with their fifth place, now go on to play against Australia in a two-legged play-off in November, for a place in the World Cup Finals in Germany.
