Brazil Coach Parreira Names 22-Man Squad For Friendly Against Russia - Cafu & Roque Jr. Missing Through InjurySubmitted by Scott Harkness on Tue, 14/02/2006 - 22:15.
Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has announced his 22-man squad for their friendly international match against Russia at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow on March 1 in Brazil’s only scheduled warm-up match before the World Cup Finals in Germany. Brazil’s captain Cafu and Roque Junior will both miss Brazil's friendly with Russia and, except for the absence of the veteran pair, the squad list was considered a reflection of the team Parreira plans to take to Germany in search of an unprecedented sixth World Cup title. “It's not time for experiments. We'll field the team we've been using,” Parreira said in an interview on Pele’s website, “I'd like to have more games, but I shouldn't complain.” Brazil’s major attribute is its attack, with a plethora of superstars all vying for a starting place including Real Madrid stars Ronaldo and Robinho, Inter Milan's Adriano and FC Barcelona's Ronaldinho, the FIFA world player of the year for both 2004 and 2005. Only two members of the squad actually play their club football in Brazil: Ricardinho and Gustavo Nery, both from the current Brazilian champion’s Corinthians. The remaining 20 players all play for European clubs. AC Milan's Cafu, the Brazil captain and the only player to play in three finals of the World Cup will likely be replaced by Real Madrid's Cicinho as captain. Many Brazilians think Cicinho deserves the starting slot, but Parreira has always relied on the experience of 35-year-old Cafu. Roque Junior of Germany's Bayer Leverkusen, another veteran of Brazil's 2002 World Cup champion, is also virtually assured a berth at this year's tournament. Parreira has a host of players to choose from including Cris of France's Olympique Lyonnais, Bayer Leverkusen’s Juan, Lucio of Bayern Munich, and Luisao of Portugal's Benfica. Two newcomers appeared to have won a spot on the World Cup team. Corinthians wingback Gustavo Nery is the backup for Real Madrid veteran Roberto Carlos, and Lyon striker Fred was Parreira's pick for the berth of injured Ricardo Oliveira, of Spain's Real Betis.
