Brazil 3-0 Chile Copa America Result: Real Madrid's Robinho Scores Hat-Trick To Give Selecao Win Over Plucky Chile SideSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sun, 01/07/2007 - 23:47.
Brazil have beaten Chile 3-0 in their Copa América 2007 Group B match in Maturin on Sunday, with a hat-trick from Real Madrid striker Robinho sealing a win over a hard working and determined Chile side. His opener came after a controversial penalty-kick was awarded in the 33rd minute, with Robinho chipping the Chile keeper Bravo for his second, then sealing the match ball and a win for Brazil six minutes later with an amazing dribbling run to slot the ball home for his hat-trick. Brazil head coach Dunga made one change from the side that lost 2-0 to Mexico in their opening Group B match, with Diego being replaced by Anderson. Chile made two changes from the side that came from behind to beat Ecuador 3-2 in their opening match with Ismael Fuentes and Gonzalo Jara coming in for Jorge Francisco Vargas, and Reinaldo Marcelinho Navia. Both sides started cagily, with Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez having a shot for Chile and Manchester United new-signing Anderson shooting for Brazil. Seville FC’s Daniel Alves replaced Maicon after the Brazilian defender received an injury as Brazil began to push forward. A controversial penalty was awarded to Brazil in the 33rd minute after the Paraguayan referee Carlos Torres deemed that Miguel Augusto Riffo had pushed a player in the penalty-area. Robinho tucked away the spot-kick to give Brazil the lead, much to the annoyance of the Chile team and management, with one of the Chile substitutes, Jorge Francisco Vargas, receiving a booking from the referee after arguing the decision with the linesman. Alvaro Andrés Ormeño almost equalised in the 42nd minute after breaking through the Seleçao defence and heading downwards to test Doni in the Brazilian goal. Mark Gonzalez and Miguel Augusto Riffo gave the Brazilians some late scares as the half came to a close, but had their shots saved. The half finished 1-0 to Brazil, with Brazil lucky to have a lead and with Chile looking likely to score. The second-half was delayed due to the netting in one goalmouth being loose, with the ridiculous sight of all the match officials, plus three or four others attempting to fix it. When the second-half did begin, Chile came out trying desperately to equalise with Chile’s man-of-the-match Humberto Suazo causing all kinds of problems to the Brazilian defence. Despite hitting the top of the goal-post from a free-kick and then minutes later breaking free of the offside trap only to be wrongly flagged offside by the linesman, the 26-year-old CF Monterrey striker continued to harass the Brazilian defence, but couldn’t find a way through. Despite the heroic attempts from Suaza, the fact that they were pushing for an equaliser gave Brazil far too much space, with Robinho sealing two late goals to grab a hat-trick for himself and a win for his country. His second goal came in the 84th minute when he latched onto Vanger Love's pass and chipped over Bravo in the Chile goal. Three minutes later, he collected the ball 40 metres from goal, dribbling brilliantly past two defenders and smashing a shot into Bravo’s right-hand corner to keep Brazil in the tournament.
