Poland, reduced to 10-men for 60 minutes of the match, have sensationally beaten Brazil 1-0 in their FIFA Under-20 World Cup 2007 Group D opening match in Montreal on Saturday.

Brazil, one of the Under-20 World Cup 2007 favourites, had the majority of possession in the first-half, with shots from Chelsea target Alexandre Pato and fellow Internacional forward Ji Parana not testing Bartosz Bialkowski in the Poland goal.

Poland took the lead against the run-of-play in the 22nd minute from an exceptional 30-yard free-kick from Grzegorz Krychowiak, which flew past Cassio in the Brazil goal to make it 1-0.

Poland left-back Krzysztof Krol was harshly sent-off for a second yellow card by referee Howard Webb in the 30th minute, after a foul on Alexandre Pato which dulled the tempo of the match for the rest of the half.

The half finished 1-0 to Poland, with Brazil still holding most of the possession, but the feisty and energetic Poles not giving any space to the Seleçao.

Brazil came out for the second-half with the same determination, but Poland defended resolutely throughout, with the Seleçao running out of ideas in the final third of the pitch.

Shots on-target from Pato and Luiz Adriano forced Bialkowski into some fine saves, as Brazil piled on the pressure.

Leandro Lima came close in the dying minutes, with his shot deflecting off his own man and looping over the crossbar to safety, much to the relief of the Poland players.

The drama was still not over, with Brazil thinking they had earned a penalty in injury-time, but Referee Webb booked Carlos Eduardo for diving.

The Poles held on to record a sensational win over the South Americans and take them to the top of Group D, for the meantime.
